Frequently asked questions
How many hours can a truck driver drive in a day?
Up to 11 hours of driving after 10 consecutive hours off duty, and only inside a 14-hour window that starts when the shift begins. Breaks do not extend the 14-hour window.
When is the 30-minute break required?
After 8 hours of driving in total without a break of at least 30 minutes. The break can be off duty, in the sleeper berth or on duty not driving, for example while loading.
What is the 70-hour/8-day rule?
A driver may not drive after 70 hours on duty in 8 days in a row, or 60 hours in 7 days if the carrier does not operate every day. A 34-hour off-duty restart sets the count back to zero.
Is this calculator a replacement for an ELD?
No. It is a planning estimate for dispatchers and drivers. At an inspection, only your ELD record counts.
